Mairead McGuinness is set to cruise through the nomination process to become EU financial services commissioner.
The Irishwoman remained poised and in control throughout her three-hour European Parliament hearing Friday, wading through a range of financial topics.
The performance won the support of economic committee lawmakers, with members of all the major political groups saying they'd vote for her candidacy. The panel's party leaders are due to meet at 4:30 p.m. to decide whether to forward a positive recommendation to the full Parliament.
Johan Van Overtveldt from the European Conservatives and Reformists said McGuinness had made a “good impression.”
“She’s clearly on top of the issues, she knows what she’s talking about and certainly her intentions are good,” he told POLITICO.
Stéphanie Yon-Courtin from the liberal Renew Europe Group said by email that McGuinness had committed to an "ambitious vision" going beyond the classic financial-services brief.
